What does “southern winter” mean?

The seasons are the opposite in the northern and southern hemispheres. Saint Helena is 17° south. Due to the low latitude, there are no significant differences in temperature over the year. In contrast there are differences in rainfall. Curiously, the island gets the most rain during the southern hemisphere winter. Otherwise, I would have expected the opposite on this latitude.
